Crochet tablecloth
A crochet tablecloth gives an eye-catching splendor and elegance to any room. There are several ways of making a table cloth in crochet.
1. Square blocks – several square blocks worked in 2 or 3 different patterns are made. They are then arranged and sewn together to form an overall pattern. A border is worked around this to give it a perfect finish.
More often than not, you’ll find such square blocks worked in filet crochet. The tablecloth in this link is a wonderful example. http://www.angelfire.com/folk/celtwich/Fruitbanquet.html
2. Motifs – are crochet patterns worked around a central ring. They may or may not be symmetrical.
If symmetrical –
- They can either be joined together with motifs of the same pattern to form an overall pattern
- Or as filler motifs in combination with another motif to form an overall pattern.
You can work a table cloth of any shape round, square, rectangle, hexagonal using motifs – it all depends on the shape of the motif.
Joining motifs –
- The same method is used whether you are joining motifs of the same pattern or filler motifs.
- While working the last round, the second motif is joined to the first motif at the appropriate places using a slip stitch.
Here is a link with a lovely pattern using a combination of two motifs – the main motif and the filler motif - http://www.angelfire.com/folk/celtwich/Ardmore.html.
This link has a pattern that uses a single motif for the entire table cloth. http://www.angelfire.com/folk/celtwich/Bumblebee.html
3. Strips – this again is of two types.
- Crocheted stripes worked in two different patterns are joined together to form and overall pattern.
- Crocheted strips used as insertions with fabric strips - The effect is truly stunning. http://www.angelfire.com/folk/celtwich/Buffetparty.html - this link has a filet crochet strip used as an insertion between fabric strips.
4. Round tablecloth – the pattern starts with a central ring – usually formed by chains joined together with a slip stitch. The pattern is worked in rounds instead of rows. http://www.angelfire.com/folk/celtwich/Design7520.html - is a link with a lovely round tablecloth worked in pineapple crochet.
5. Single piece table cloth – here the square or rectangular table cloth is crocheted as a single continuous piece of fabric. http://www.angelfire.com/folk/celtwich/Aristocrat.html
Note: To give a really elegant look a tablecloth must hang down at least 6” from the edge of the table. http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/tablecloths.php - is a link with a cool collection of tablecloth patterns.
