Patterns in tunisian crochet-PartII
The very first stitch is probably what our ancestors took to hold together leaves and barks – to protect themselves from the elements. Like all else, stitches too have evolved from what was born out of necessity to an art form. It truly amazing what our fingers can do with just some yarn and a hook. That Tunisian crochet is a cross between knitting is evident from the Tunisian knit stitch and the Tunisian purl stitch.
Abbreviations:
Yarn over hook – y.o.h
Chain – ch
Tunisian Knit Stitch:
For the sampler make 20 chains.
Row 1: Insert the hook into the second ch from hook, y.o.h, draw loop through and leave on hook, * insert hook into the next ch, y.o.h, draw loop through and leave on hook; repeat from * to end of row – you should now have 20 loops on hook.
Row 2: y.o.h, draw loop through the first stitch on hook, * y.o.h, draw loop through 2 loops; repeat from * until there is only one loop on hook.
Row 3: 1 ch, * insert hook from front to back between the two strands of yarn that make up the vertical stitch, y.o.h, draw loop through, repeat from * to end of row.
Row 4: y.o.h, draw loop through 1 loop, * y.o.h, draw through next two loops, repeat from * to end of row. Repeat row 3 and 4 for pattern.
Though the pattern is slow moving, the fabric produced is thicker than a knitted garment - ideal for making winter garments.
Tunisian Purl Stitch:
For the sampler make 20 chains.
Row 1: Insert the hook into the second ch from hook, y.o.h, draw loop through and leave on hook, * insert hook into the next ch, y.o.h, draw loop through and leave on hook; repeat from * to end of row – you should now have 20 loops on hook.
Row 2: y.o.h, draw loop through the first stitch on hook, * y.o.h, draw loop through 2 loops; repeat from * until there is only one loop on hook.
Row 3: 1 ch * put the hook under the yarn, now insert the hook from right to left between the two strands of yarn that make up the vertical stitch, then pass the yarn under the hook, y.o.h, pull loop through (Tip: hold down the yarn in front of the vertical stitch with your thumb and you can easily pull the loop through the vertical stitch), repeat from * to end of row.
Row 4: y.o.h, draw loop through 1 loop, * y.o.h, draw through next two loops, repeat from * to end of row. Repeat row 3 and 4 for pattern.
